Jumbo lifts and transports the world’s largest delivery of feed barges

In May 2017, the Jumbo team set yet another landmark in shipping by completing the loading of the biggest delivery of feed barges to date. This involved carrying 7 feed barges in one shipment from the loading point at the shipyard in Gdynia, Poland to the East coast of Canada. But how did we do it?
The Master Plan
This entire shipment was meticulously planned in advance by our shore based operators and innovative engineering team to determine the best possible approach. Knowing the importance of ensuring the barges reach their end destination safely, the team communicated with Steinsvik throughout every step of the A to Z process.
Providing precision planning and continuous status updates is what we promise to ensure there are no surprises.
The Team
In our world of heavy lift transport, it is our people who make the difference. The MV Jumbo Vision, her Captain, Frans Geelhoed, working with Jumbo for 17 years now, and his capable heavy lift crew were entrusted with the transportation task. The 7 feed barges were skillfully loaded in Poland and shipped to Canada where they were safely unloaded using the vessel’s own cranes in single lift mode.
The Ship – Jumbo Vision
The shipping of the barges was carried out by our MV Jumbo Vision, a vessel of the H-class series. The H-class is equipped with 2 powerful 400mt cranes enabling them to lift cargoes up to 800mt.
Due to the size of the H-class series, these vessels can load/discharge heavy lift cargos in small and shallow water ports.

The Cargo: Feed Barges
The advanced feeding barges are designed and developed by Steinsvik and are utilised by the fish farming industry as feeding machines and storage facilities.
Each barge weighs 185mt and with a volume of about 2850cbm they can store up to 300mt of food pellets, feeding millions of fish every day.
TP Shipping
Jumbo was contracted by the Norwegian shipbroker, TP Shipping, Grimstad to carry out this project.
TP Shipping are independent heavy lift and project shipbrokers, active within various parts of the shipping industry.
Due to the excellent cooperation and transparency between all parties involved this project proved to be another heavy lift success story. Jumbo met our timing and budget expectations and reliably performed to Steinsvik’s full satisfaction.
